Beginning in the late 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement aimed to uphold traditional artistic skills and craftsmanship in the face of increasing industrialisation and mass-production. In Britain, the movement drew upon pre-Victorian architectural features - emphasising large, open plan rooms instead of the previous boxy, space-saving Victorian designs. Natural materials and a lack of symmetry were also emphasised, giving Arts and Crafts houses a quaint and individual look that set them far apart from other houses in this period.
The houses below often feature a variety of materials, such as stone, thatch, wood and brick to emphasise texture and promote artisan crafts from the medieval era. Poet and artist William Morris played a large role in the popularity of Arts and Crafts in Britain - inspired by art critic John Ruskin, he believed that industrialisation was quashing creativity and traditional art skills, so based his company Morris Marshall Faulkner & Co. around these values. Function was at the core of the design - everything else had to follow this, countering the overly ornate trends of the Victorian era at the time.
