There’s something about cottages that’s innately festive. It might be the exposed beams, or the woodburning stoves, or the fact that some of them seem straight out of The Holiday, but at this time of year, there’s nothing more tempting than curling up on a comfy sofa in a cosy country cottage. Although banned in London since the 13th Century to minimise fire risk, thatched roofs are a charming feature of rural houses, and create an almost fairytale look, perfect for a traditional or historical setting. And what home would be complete without a furry friend to keep you company?

One of the most charming aspects of cottages is their handcrafted look. Perfectly straight, parallel lines would seem out of place on these old buildings, and their sloping roofs and wonky walls are all part of the chocolate box aesthetic.

Stone cottages have a more natural look, their textures and colours blending with their country surroundings. They also have the advantage of looking a bit more continental, so you can imagine a beautiful winter setting in an Italian villa or French chalet.
