Modern Vintage: A Timeless Style
There's a certain type of decor that we've found hard to categorise. It's always been one of our favourites - colourful, but not modern, quirky, but not garish. We've decided to call it 'Modern Vintage', as it has elements of contemporary and traditional design, taking the beauty of vintage furniture and patterns and infusing it with bright colours and up-to-date features. These locations are effortlessly stylish, and bring a unique, welcoming feel to any shoot, so we thought they deserved their very own keyword to set them apart from the rest.

A variety of textures and layers are a distinctive characteristic of the modern vintage look. Rugs, cushions and mismatched chairs create a relaxed, lived-in feel, making the space seem inviting and moving away from the sleek, clean look of modern houses which can sometimes feel cold and unwelcoming.

This style also feels busy and eclectic - often the walls are crammed with paintings and the surfaces covered in weird and wonderful ornaments. These help to give the impression that the space wasn't designed, but has evolved over many years as the owners have collected items and souvenirs, with different eras of furniture creating layers of history within the home.

Some houses with this look have leaned towards the more 'vintage' element, with muted, calming colours, wooden accents, and carefully chosen furniture that doesn't overcrowd the space. Earthy colours like browns and greens create a more toned-down version of the style, whilst liberal use of decorative objects keep the house from feeling too minimalist.

Balance is key - too many patterns, and the space can feel busy, but too few and the sense of charm is lost. Having a mixture of clear surfaces and organised ornaments can give some order to the chaos, and layering patterns over plain block colours helps to keep the room fresh and interesting. What we love about this style is that it manages to create a homely, lived-in feel that's still fit for a lifestyle shoot.
